Assistant Professor

FYSem/SYSem Position: Assistant Professor

Program: First-Year Seminar, Second-Year Seminar, and English Composition

ÌýThe Department of General Education at the ºì´½Ö±²¥ invites applications from candidates for 2 full-time faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The position will involve teaching at least six undergraduate-level courses a year (three per semester) in First-year Seminar (FYS), Second-year Seminar (SYS), and English Composition. These courses are General Education requirements for the joint AUCA̧–Bard College degree, focusing on developing and enhancing students’ basic skills in academic reading, writing, thinking, and speaking. FYS and English Composition are taught in combination, based on a common syllabus across all sections, with a focus on key texts and ideas in historical thought and cultural monuments. SYS is a topics course that continues and builds upon the work of FYS and English Composition, with individual faculty free to choose the topic of the course based on their teaching and research expertise. Accommodations in teaching load may be offered based on research activities. Responsibilities also include service activities at the departmental and university levels.

REQUIREMENTS

  • MA/MSc or Ph.D., preferably in arts, humanities, or social sciences
  • Experience of teaching in an English-medium university environment
  • Excellent command of Academic English (all courses are taught in English)
  • Evidence of experience and commitment to writing-based pedagogy

Description of the Job:Ìý

The Writing and Academic Resource Center (WARC) Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the daily operations of the WARC. The Coordinator's primary function is to supervise student tutors. Secondary functions of the coordinator are to promote WARC services and coordinate with Director on WARC objectives and activities; with the Director, recruit and select WARC tutors; help develop writing and research skills workshops; develop materials for and maintain the WARC website and YouTube channel; attend and present information about the WARC at outreach functions such as orientation sessions for students and faculty; maintain WARC budget; collect and analyze WARC usage data.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise and interface with WARC tutors regarding matters of attendance, scheduling, and performance
  • Collaborate regularly with the Director to ensure the WARC’s objectives are being met
  • Serve as WARC’s primary support staff, responding to telephone calls, email, drop-in traffic, and filing/photocopying needs
  • Conduct workshops for students, staff, and faculty, focusing on specific writing and research skills
  • Attend and participate in tutor training workshops and courses offered by the Director and guest presenters
  • Monitor and prepare tutor stipend payout data
  • Collaborate in the process of recruitment and selection of new tutors
  • Collaborate on designing and leading tutor training and teambuilding events
  • Ensure tutors receive on-going and individualized training as needed, including supervising the WARC’s mentoring program
  • Maintain WARC records and files, and analyze performance data
  • Assist the Director in drafting reports
  • Develop and maintain WARC website and social media accounts
  • Create content for and monitor the performance of the WARC’s YouTube page
  • Work with AUCA computer/media staff to maintain and develop the WARC’s website and online scheduling system
  • Attend student orientations and conduct other outreach activities to introduce and spread awareness of the WARC’s services
  • Procure supplies for WARC operations from the Physical Plant Department
