About the project: During April and October, the AUCA Center for Civic Engagement holds a tree planting event at Elm Grove (Karagachevaya Rosha) as part of the "Green Month" initiative. This collaborative effort continues the work to restore the grove's ecosystem, which has seen the planting of over 10,000 trees since the initiative began. The planting efforts are part of a larger project involving the Bishkek Mayor's Office, AUCA, and the French-Kyrgyz Association of Ecotourism to rejuvenate Elm Grove, the oldest man-made green space in Bishkek. The grove has suffered significant damage from illegal cutting and settlement activities in the 1990s, which caused it to shrink in size by half. This ongoing collaboration remains vital for preserving Bishkek’s urban forests and ensuring their sustainability for future generations.
